God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars

"God is in everything I see."
This explains why nothing is separate, by itself or in itself.

You are a spirit on a human journey.

Reflections from Students of the School of Theology, CJCU

When I read the article entitled Believing on this blog site, some sentences caught my eyes... When Jesus says that whoever believes “into” him shall never die... Eternal life is not the result of believing in.  It is the experience of believing.’

Indeed, we have so many imaginations about “eternal life”, but if we did not get “into” Him, how could we say we are disciples of Jesus?

If belief did not change our thought, our mind or any ideology, our lives are never renewed with God’s words. The words just got into our brain and stay as part of knowledge, but never sparkle in our life. And logos never root in our body.  How could we then say: we receive Jesus as our Savior?

Right. That is cheating ourselves and our brains.  We do a lot of services to show that we are Christians, but it’s not helping our eternal life.

關於這篇The Bible and I的 Blog,裡面提到:
Faith is not just a course to be completed, but a life time journey.  We are here not only to learn what to think, but how to think.」

Grace is something you can never get but only be given.

Jesus does not give recipes that show the way to God as other teachers of religion do. He is himself the way.

Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.

Conscience is the perfect interpreter of life.

Faith in God's revelation has nothing to do with an ideology which glorifies the status quo.

Faith is never identical with piety.

Grace must find expression in life, otherwise it is not grace.

In the Church of Jesus Christ there can and should be no non-theologians.

It is always the case that when the Christian looks back, he is looking at the forgiveness of sins.

It may be that when the angels go about their task praising God, they play only Bach. I am sure, however, that when they are together as family they play Mozart.

Precious Lord, Take My Hand (親愛, 牽我手) - Sung by Elvis Presley 貓王演唱

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand, precious Lord, Lead me home

When my way grows drear
Precious Lord, linger near
When my light is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand, lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord, Lead me home

When the darkness appears
And the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river, I stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand precious Lord, Lead me home

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, Lead me home

Music: George N. Allen (1812-1877)
Lyrics: Thomas A. Dorsey (1899-1993)

Believing

Prepositions can be very eloquent.  A man is “in” architecture or a woman is “in” teaching, we say, meaning that is what they do weekdays and how they make enough money to enjoy themselves the rest of the time.  But if we say they are “into” these things, that is another story.  “Into” means something more like total immersion.  They live and breathe what they do.  They take it home with them nights.  They can’t get enough of it.  To be “into” books means that just the sight of a signed first edition of Alice in Wonderland sets your heart pounding.  To be “in” books means selling them at B. Dalton’s.

Along similar lines, New Testament Greek speaks of believing “into” rather than believing “in”.  In English we can perhaps convey the distinction best by using either “in” or no preposition at all.

Believing in God is an intellectual position.  It need have no more effect on your life than believing in Freud’s method of interpreting dreams or the theory that Sir Francis Bacon wrote Romeo and Juliet.

Believing God is something else again.  It is less a position than a journey, less a realization than a relationship.  It doesn’t leave you cold like believing the world is round.  It stirs your blood like believing the world is a miracle.  It affects who are and what you do with your life like believing your house is on fire or somebody loves you.

We believe in God when for one reason or another we choose to do so.  We believe God when somehow we run into God in a way that by and large leaves us no choice to do otherwise.

When Jesus says that whoever believes “into” him shall never die, he does not mean that to be willing to sign your name to the Nicene Creed guarantees eternal life.  Eternal life is not the result of believing in.  It is the experience of believing.

- Frederick Buechner Whistling in the Dark: An ABC Theologized”, 1988

"Dear God,
I am so afraid to open my clenched fists!
Who will I be when I have nothing left to hold on to?
Who will I be when I stand before you with empty hands?
Please help me to gradually open my hands
and to discover that I am not what I own,
but what you want to give me.
And what you want to give me is love,
unconditional, everlasting love.
Amen."

"How can I be a great man - like you?"
"Why be a great man?" said the Master,
"Being a man is a great enough achievement."

***
The Master's expansive mood emboldened his disciples to say,
"Tell us what you got from enlightenment. Did you become divine?"
"No."
"Did you become a saint?"
"No."
"Then what did you become?"
"Awake."

***
It intrigued the disciples that the master who lived so simply would not condemn his wealthy followers.
"It is rare but not impossible for someone to be rich and holy," he said one day.
 "How?"
"When money has the effect on his heart that the shadow of that bamboo has on the courtyard,"
The disciples turned to watch the bamboo's shadow sweep the courtyard without stirring a single particle of dust.

The World Communion Sunday Special  -  Oct 2, 2011

And who, under the same circumstances, am I? Or what shall I prove to be?
It’s not as if I haven’t been warned.  Jesus has spoken at least 3 times of his suffering and death – and fully as many times he’s declared that if I intend to come after him I must deny my self and take my cross and follow him.

“For those,” he said, “who would save their lives will lose them, and those who lose their lives for my sake and the gospel’s will save them.”
Who can forget such words?  “Go, sell what you have, and come, follow me.”
Those words.  And these: ”The cup that I drink – you will drink.”

The cup.

And I, with all his disciples, heard and agreed. “Yes,” we said, “we are able to drink that cup.” And I meant it!  No, I was not lying.  I would do anything for Jesus.
But that was during the period of words and learning, a sort of prelude, I suppose. Sunday school, confirmation, sermons, study, preparation.  A time of pieties and promises.

Well – here comes the cup!
Here’s the real world, and the world’s at war! And my deeds are my words now, and the deeds don’t lie.     Matthew 20:20-23

- Walter Wangerin, Jr, “Measuring the Days” 1993
